Knee Replacement Recovery Timeline: Week-by-Week Guide
Knowing what to expect makes recovery far less stressful. Every patient heals at a different pace, but most follow a similar path after total knee replacement.
In the Hospital (Days 1-3)
Most patients stand and take their first steps with a walker within 24 hours of surgery. Pain is managed with a combination of medicines, and the physiotherapy team starts gentle bending and straightening exercises right away.
Recovery Stages
- Weeks 1-2: Walking with a walker or crutches, caring for the wound, and doing exercises several times a day. Swelling and bruising are normal.
- Weeks 3-6: Moving to a stick or walking unaided indoors. Knee bending usually reaches 90-110 degrees. Many people begin short outings.
- Weeks 6-12: Driving, climbing stairs comfortably, and returning to desk work. Strength and balance keep improving.
- 3-6 Months: Most daily activities feel natural. Swelling settles and walking distance increases.
- 6-12 Months: Final recovery. Low-impact activities like swimming, cycling and golf are comfortable.
Tips for a Smoother Recovery
- Do your physiotherapy exercises every day, even when the knee feels stiff.
- Use ice and elevation to control swelling, especially after exercise.
- Keep your home safe: remove loose rugs and use a raised toilet seat if needed.
- Follow your surgeon advice on blood-thinning medicine to lower the risk of clots.
- Eat a protein-rich diet to help the wound and muscles heal.
Call Your Surgeon Promptly If You Notice
Increasing redness, warmth or discharge from the wound, fever, or sudden calf pain or swelling. Chest pain or breathlessness needs emergency care.
Recovery takes patience, but the vast majority of patients are very happy with the result. Your surgeon and physiotherapist will tailor the timeline to your age, fitness and the type of implant used.
